Overview
  1. What is Location Tracker and how do I use it?

    In short, Location Tracker is a service to receive real time location information from your phone or tablet with a variety of sources. To quickly get started:

    1. Install our client app on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.
    2. Launch the client and it will walk you through creating a Location Tracker account and registering your device with our servers.
    3. You'll receive a User and Device ID, which you can always find on your dashboard or through the Settings menu of the Location Tracker client app on your device. Your ID's are randomly generated identifier which allows other apps retrieve the location of your device at any time.
    4. Copy and paste your User and Device ID into any application that supports Location Tracker and it will instantly be able to receive your devices location.

    In more detail, Location Tracker is a platform for locating mobile devices. On the server side, we provide an HTTP API for receiving coordinates of devices addressable by User and Device IDs. On the device side, our iOS client constantly update your location on our server to provide real time location information when ever you ask for it.

    If you're a developer or even just have some scripting knowledge, you can integrate Location Tracker into your application, website, smart home, or anything else using our API. Examples in various programming languages can be found here.

  2. How much does Location Tracker cost?

    The honest answer is: At this moment nothing. As long as we can run the software on our own server, it will be for free. Once we need to rent a server just for this, we will follow the example of the PushOver project. The usage itself will be for free. No monthly fee whatsoever. But a single one time payment when you download the app might be necessary.

  3. Is Location Tracker really unlimited?

    Yes, but ... to prevent unnecessary server traffic a location request is limited to once per minute per device. But let's be honest, how much do you move in 1 minute? Also we may introduce a free limit of devices per groups. But this will for sure be higher then for any normal use necessary. Maybe 100 devices? We have to discover ourselves.

  4. Do you have an Android version?

    Unfortunately as of this moment, no. We just started the project and concentrate on iOS devices running iOS 10 and newer for now. But if you like the project and want to make an Android version, we would be very happy to work together with you.

Location Updates
  1. How often is the location updated?

    Location Tracker uses Apples Significant Location Change function to keep the effect on your battery as small as possible. What this means is, your location is updated once you exceed a distance of 500m to your last known location, as well as a time of 5 minutes. As an example: when you are walking, your location will be updated every 500m, when you are driving, however, your location will be updated every 5 minutes.

  2. How accurate is Location Tracker?

    Location Tracker uses the latest GPS technology, as well as cell tower triangulation and WiFi detection to get the most precise location of your phone possible.

  3. Why do I need to allow background updates?

    If you do not allow background location updates, the location of your iOS device can only be updated if you keep the app always in the forground. Because this is not very likely, we ask you to allow background updates.

  4. Will Location Tracker drain my devices battery?

    Yes, but negligible. On a normal day the Location Tracker App will use between 1 to 2 percent of your devices battery, depending how much you move.

  5. How can I stop the location updates?

    To stop frequent location updates, open the Location Tracker App, go to Preferences and turn off Background Updates. Now your location will only be updated on our server if you manually click the Update Now button.

  6. Who can see my devices location?

    Only someone who knows both of your keys, the unique user id and the device id can see your devices coordinates.

  7. What will happen if I restart my device?

    After restarting or shutting down your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch Location Tracker will stop updating your location. To restart the location updates again, open the app once. This will start our background process and the Location Tracker server will receive location updates again.

  8. What happens if I logout?

    If you are logged in or out has no effect on the location updates. The login area is only there to protect the position of your devices and groups.

Groups
  1. How can I add devices to a group?

    To add devices to a group you need to be the owner of that group. The owner is the person who created the group. To add new devices open the group settings, click the 'Add New Member' button and paste in the field the unique device id of the device you would like to add. You can find the device id in the preferences (Me -> Preferences -> Device ID). Alternativly click the 'Invite New Members' button in the group preferences. This will generate a 6 digit invitation code. Share this code will the people you want to add to your group. To join a group, click the 'Join New Group' button.

  2. Can I receive the location from multiple devices?

    Sure, thats the whole idea behind the Location Tracker concept. The easiest way to do so is to register a Location Tracker Group once you are logged in. Just add all the devices you want to track to the group and with a single HTTP request you receive the real time location information of all of them.

  3. What are Location Tracker Groups?

    A Location Tracker Group is simply a group of devices. To develop for example a door opener project with the help of the Location Tracker iOS App, you need to constantly check the location of multiple devices. To reduce the amount of traffic to our server, we introduced Location Tracker Goups. In the example case you would create a Group on the Location Tracker website which is called DoorOpener. Once you open that group, you can add all your family members to that group. With a single HTTP call you can then receive the location off all of them at once.

  4. Can I add devices from a different account?

    Short answer: Yes. Once you know the device ID of other devices registered on Location Tracker, you can add them to your group and track their movement.

  2. How do I test if the location updates work?

    To simulate a significant location change turn on Airplane mode for 5 seconds, then turn it off again and wait for another 5 seconds. This will trigger a location update independent of the state of the Location Tracker App.

  3. Why did I get a new device ID?

    If you uninstall Location Tracker from your iOS device and reinstall it later, you will need to register your device again and you will receive a new device ID. The same is true when you delete your device from the Location Tracker web interface.

    The data transferred between your mobile device, the cloud server, and your data processing device is encrypted using the same technologies practiced by online banking.

  3. Can you see my password?

    No. Your password is stored fully encrypted. We can not decrypt it. Once you forgot your password, there is no way to restore it. You have to create a new password with the help of our Forgot Password page.

  4. Will my data be deleted if I delete the App?

    No. To delete the data stored on our server you will have to login to your account using the web interface and delete your devices on the My Profile page.

  5. What exactly do you store on your server?

    We store your email address, your password, the last submitted longitude, latitude, altitude, speed, horizontal and vertical accuracy, as well as the device name you defined, the group name and a unique device id provided by Apple.   6. Will all my data be deleted when I delete my account?

    Yes. Once you delete your account within the web interface, all your devices, groups and other data stored on our server will be deleted immediately. It could be, however, that your data is still stored in our backups. But even these will be overwritten after some time.
